Writing task 1 - volcano

The maps below illustrate changes in the natural landscape and the position of a village on an island after a volcanic eruption. All changes were observed in the 1815- 2015 period.

Overall, not only did the eruption change the shape of this volcano but it also scaled down the village.

In 1815, the island comprised 2 main parts: a cinder cone volcano at the western end of the island and a village occupying most of the remaining area. There had been 2 residential areas forming this village, one located in the far east of the island and the other in the center, near the foot of the volcano. These two residential areas encircled two lakes, with sizes and the number of houses being relatively similar; the lake in the east had been smaller than that in the center. Also, palm trees had been dotted across the island, mainly distributed near the residential areas and at the foot of the volcano.

200 years after the eruption, the volcano no longer kept its original shape; so did the residential area near its foot. The eruption had destroyed nearly half of the volcano's size, turning the destroyed part into a lake. This lake stretched to a part of the original residential area and the number of houses there was reduced by over two times. Also, this 200-year period witnessed the residential area in the far east of the island scale down, with the number of houses reduced by nearly half. Plus, all the palm trees near the foot of the volcano disappeared.
