Data Technician


Data technicians in the climate change division of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will gather, organize, and input data received from research scientists at agencies, institutions, and universities. The majority of the data you will gather as part of our ongoing monitoring of greenhouse gases (GHGs) must be entered into the appropriate data file. In addition to GHGs, you must be able to identify, separate out, and input data about long-lived GHGs (LLGHGs), such as carbon dioxide and methane, into the database dedicated to tracking them. Additionally, you must identify and maintain the database of trace gases, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), that contribute to greenhouse warming. A separate database tracks trends in atmospheric water vapor (AWV).


Accuracy of data input is vital. The accumulated data will become part of the report sent by the United States to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for inclusion in their next comprehensive report on the global climate. These data help inform the panel in developing recommendations for international climate change policy.
