COMMUNITY INITIATIVES REPORT: Reducing Violent Crimes Among Youths A local urban police force has positively impacted violent crime among youths by implementing a new program. Teams of police officers and probation officers work together to make sure that youth gang members and other offenders follow the terms of their probation. The impact of the program was seen in a single night. Four officers—two police officers and two probation officers—arrived at the crime scene. They found a 15-year-old shooting victim lying on the ground. There was a crowd around him. Some of the people in the crowd had previously been punished for crimes. When the anti-gang police officers from the area got out of the car, the onlookers stayed at the scene. Although the officers were well known and taken seriously, the witnesses stayed, as they felt that there was no harm in watching.
