Before getting a permanent assignment at our hospital, all operating room registered nurses will have the opportunity to serve in various capacities before, during, and after surgeries are performed. After you have completed training and had experience in each aspect of OR nursing, we hope to be able to offer you a more permanent position in the area of your choice, depending on current staffing needs at that time.


As part of your training, you will have the opportunity to work in the following areas over the coming months:


- Perioperative Nurse: You will spend several weeks as a perioperative nurse in the OR. Here, you will gain experience in all the functions of an OR and act as one of the surgeon's assistants. You will handle surgical instruments, control bleeding, and perform postsurgical suturing of the wound.


- Perianesthesia Nurse: You will also get a chance to work as a perianesthesia nurse. In this capacity, you will deliver both pre- and post-operative care to patients who have been given general anesthesia during surgery. You will monitor their vital signs after surgery and make sure they revive completely and without complications from the anesthetic.


- Postoperative Nurse: As a postoperative nurse, you will monitor patients who are brought into the recovery room after surgery. Again, you will observe and record their vital signs and make sure no post-surgical complications set in. In consultation with the surgeon, you will help determine when post-surgical patients can be moved from recovery to their rooms.
