During the planning phase of our proposed new product, we expect you to adhere to the following guidelines to determine cost and efficiency of production:

1. Meet with designers and engineers developing the product. Evaluate blueprints and technical drawings. Determine machinery, tools, and materials needed for manufacturing the new product.

2. Prepare a complete list of parts needed. Determine if it is more cost-effective for our firm to make these new parts or to buy them from suppliers. Get an estimate for supplies from each parts supplier. Compare that cost with the cost of in-house manufacturing of each part.

3. If the cost of in-house manufacturing depends largely on developing new software, refer the matter to our software department. If it is more dependent on recalibrating current equipment, engineers or factory supervisors can provide you with accurate estimates.

4. Prepare a time-phase chart that indicates how long it will take to design and make the tools needed to manufacture the product. Include in the chart the estimated time needed to "debug" the tools and to solve all problems.

5. Prepare learning-curve charts to show how long it is expected to take our workforce to master the new equipment to make the new product with the greatest efficiency and at the lowest cost. If costs do not diminish over a reasonable time period, we may have to rethink processes.

6. Using all the above information, calculate the standard labor hours needed to produce a specified number of the new product. Convert this value to dollar amounts. Factor in waste, overhead, and profit to yield a unit cost figure in dollars.
