An energy-efficient building must not only use energy efficiently while it is occupied, it must be constructed in accordance with the highest standards of sustainable resource use.


- Use regional materials. Select materials that are found or manufactured within the region. This yields energy savings in transport.

  - Regional materials shall make up at least 10 percent of all construction materials.

  - Regional materials making up only part of a construction product are calculated as a percentage based on weight.

  - Use of regional materials must be documented.


- Biobased materials. These materials have plant or animal materials as the main ingredient. At least 50 percent of materials should be documented as biobased.


- Reused material. At least 5 percent of materials should be refurbished or reused. Documentation of the amount of reused materials must be provided.


- Recycled content. Both postconsumer and preconsumer materials should make up at least 10 percent of material content by weight.

  - Calculate the recycled content value based on the estimated cost of materials. Documentation is required.

  - If only part of the product uses recycled material, determine recycled content value of a material assembly by weight, with the fractional value of the weight multiplied by the total estimated cost of the material assembly.
