Pilling a Cat

As a veterinary technician, you will often be called upon to give a cat oral medication in pill form. Cats are typically less cooperative than dogs when it comes to accepting oral medication. The first step is to restrain the cat. Place the cat on a table. Wrap the cat in a towel, leaving only the head exposed. Stand behind the cat so that the cat cannot move backward. If you are right-handed, use your left arm to keep the cat from moving sideways. Hold the pill between your thumb and index finger of your right hand. Tilt the cat's head back. The lower jaw should drop open. If it does not, you will need to gently pry it open with your middle finger. Hold the jaw open and drop the pill as far back as possible in the cat's mouth. Then hold the mouth closed and gently stroke the throat. Blowing on its nose may also encourage the cat to swallow.
